All Dewy Eyed
Water refraction is possible at macro ratio 2:1 and greater.
Macro Photography has always been something I've been drawn to both on land and below the waves. My fascination with this diminutive side of nature is transfixed with the way we can look at the world and objects in ways that are simply overlooked. Take water refraction for example. How many of us have actually walked around a park or green space in the early morning hours and noted the amount of dew on the foliage? Most of us, right? Now look a little closer the next time you witness that. Look for insects that are still in the land of nod. You'll find that they too are covered in a slight sheen of dew, and that is where the magic can be found.
Closing in on the subject those dew drops at 2:1 become almost like additional lenses magnifying the textures of the surfaces on which they rest. This could be anatomical elements of the subject we're photographing, wings or eyes. As in the image above the eyes of the Robber Fly are compound eyes, many hundreds of smaller lenses comprised into one big all seeing eye. This is the same for many flies and insect species. What interests me the most is how the surface of that eye is then magnified again through the dew drop to give an even greater detailed element to the shot.
It's an amazingly rewarding thing to be able to snag imagery like this, and a journey of discovery that has no foreseeable terminus.
