Natural Selection Officially Selected
My first feature screenplay is officially selected for the Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards.
Seems wild that I recently opted to blog about my recently completed and first feature length screenplay, tentatively entitled 'Natural Selection' just a few days ago. The topic of that post was simply to discuss the merits or politics of the protagonist. It came to be some form of Twilight Zone foreboding as later that same day I went and checked on Film Freeway, a centralized platform for Video and Film Festival submissions, only to find the screenplay has now been officially selected as a contender in the Los Angeles International Screenplay Awards. To say I'm stoked is beyond an understatement. Blown away more like, but ermmm, not in the context of the screenplay though as that would suggest I was engaged in activities that would piss off the main character.
If nothing else this story is simply what one would expect to find in the mind of a fanatical environmentalist, a misanthrope, someone who prefers the company of nature than society. Although my last desire is to place labels on anyone given that modern society is all too quick to do just that, label anyone who doesn't 'abide' by the acceptable norms of the general population in general. To better phrase that I see the actions and mindset of the protagonist, oddly named Mark too? as journeys to the ever expanding boundaries of his personal ethics when it comes to what he deems to be acceptable in the defense of the natural planet.
Yes, there is gratuitous violence and many people say violence is not a solution. To counter that I'd ask "What is"? Thus far we are where now? 26 Global Climate Conferences and yet the human species is still driving our Worldly home, in fact accelerating it, toward ever horrific scenarios when it comes to global warming. To the amounts of Methane and CO2 in the atmosphere. With the war in Ukraine and an unprecedented heatwave expected in India this year alone may well signal itself as a very real platform for civil unrest due to a lack of basic food items. Ukraine and India are, after all, two of the biggest sources of wheat on planet Earth. With Indonesia currently banning the export of Palm Oil which also features in about 50% of all products in Supermarket shelves points at yet another indicator of possible hurdles ahead.
For way too long man has thought it can play a better game than mother nature. It has sought to manage the planet in a way that benefits only it as a species. There is no benefit for nature in the game plan of man it seems. We are now in an era of massive natural decline. Wildlife populations are collapsing, natural spaces are being destroyed for cultivation, mineral extraction or human inhabitation. Fossil fuel extraction is out of control. It all has to come to a head. There is no legislation, no political policies, that favor Nature over the needs, wants and desires of man. And this is where the protagonist of 'Natural Selection' steps in.
Whether he's lopping the arms and legs off of shark fin traders and throwing their almost lifeless bodies into the pools of their lavish mansions in the Hills of California leaving them to drown as do the sharks once relieved of their appendages or force feeding oil executives with crude oil, yeah, pretty ghastly, he goes on his rampage. Little did he prepare for his crusade to resound with equally minded and motivated entities around the planet. Those who are simply hacked off, for want of a better term, with watching and waiting for some semblance of justice for the natural world to appear. Being patient only instead to be served up with a continuous barrage of policies that underline destruction and debit. Even over a short time the actions of copycat killers around the World soon start to have an impact on industrial and political decision making.
The underlying question, with an untold twist, is simply "Is this what it would take"? Most policy makers know they are protected by the laws of their respective lands, and to a social level for the core elements, when it comes to their falling foul of the general consensus. But what if these policy makers are forced to think more about the very real risk their decisions will place on their own and, by association, their extended families existence?
And thus our protagonist dances through his quest. So effortlessly does he sail through his targets due to his relentless research and planning. He literally could be anyone. He could be that person next you on the subway, he could be the office assistant, the plumber working on your kitchen sink, the mechanic adjusting your brakes at the local garage. He could be anywhere, he could be anyone. He takes a partner in crime and builds up to his crescendo. To 'address' someone with a direct hand in making a decision that served as the catalyst for him to embark on this journey of retribution, that tipped him over the edge.
Dogged and sought by a team of hardened homicide detectives, the stomachs of whom he managed to turn on a few occasions, he builds for his finale. In a new world where numerous naturally damaging industrial projects have been cancelled and illegal mining and harvesting activities have been clamped down on to an extent of 100% elimination, there remains one target, one more hit. But I'll not be giving too much away for now.
If there are any serious producers or production entities 'out there' willing to read through and discuss this project at greater lengths then I'd love to chat. Naturally...
