The Snakes of Okinawa. Pt. 1
Crawling through the undergrowth in search of these slippery critters brings me face to face with a plethora of species, including one previously never filmed before!
Okinawa is a veritable treasure trove when it comes to the diversity of wildlife. This short film goes to look at some recent adventures in my hunt to film the 'Akamata' or Ryukyu Odd-Toothed Snake in the northern Jungle areas. During my search for that critter I crossed path with a number of incredible species that call the dense jungles of the Yambaru home. In doing my best to document their presence I have come up with this short catalogue film sharing some of these encounters. This only goes to highlight the very tip of the iceberg when it comes to the diversity of life in these incredible green rolling hills.
I am currently in the planning to continue through this series with a follow up Part.2 and as such have already amassed quite an array of potential footage. I guess what sets this apart though is that fat that I managed to film a snake species potentially for the first time, ever. Seldom seen and rarely photographed, I know of only two other still images in existence, the Silver Habu is something that may be encountered once in a lifetime. I consider myself so fortunate to have stumbled across a juvenile of the species on a recent trip North. An incredible and very special moment for me thus far here in the wilds of Okinawa.
The jungle looked back at them with a vastness, a breathing moss-and-leaf silence, with a billion diamond and emerald insect eyes
