First Swell of the Season

This photograph captures the first pulse of a long-awaited winter swell as it meets the Kadena Sea Wall, viewed across the mouth of the Hija River from Toguchi. After months of languid summer seas, the arrival of waves like these signals a shift in season and mood—gray skies overhead, a biting chill in the wind, and the anticipation of surfers finally pulling their boards out of storage. Through the haze, the urban sprawl of Sunabe looms in the background, a reminder that even amidst concrete and coastline development, nature still dictates the rhythm of life here. The frame carries both the grit of the season and the exhilaration of change, as ocean energy surges back into Okinawa’s shores.

Technically, I shot this with a Tamron 150–600mm zoom lens stretched to its full 600mm reach, paired with the Canon EOS 5DSr. That compression allowed me to frame the breaking wave against the distant city, a juxtaposition of raw natural force and human sprawl. The telephoto’s reach made the spray and hollow of the wave feel immediate, as though the viewer is standing right on the seawall itself, even though I was positioned much farther away. The soft haze of the winter light and the muted sky acted as a natural filter, stripping the scene to elemental tones—steel sea, gray sky, concrete land—and letting the wave, at the center of it all, be the voice of the season.
