Iriomote Milky Way
Milky Way over the Sangara Waterfall of Iriomote
Photographing the Milky Way over the Sangara Waterfalls on Iriomote Island was as much an adventure as it was a photographic challenge. To even reach the falls, I had to hike for nearly an hour through the dense, foreboding jungle in complete darkness, my headlamp catching the occasional glint of a snake’s scales or the fleeting movement of wild pigs rustling in the undergrowth. By the time I arrived, the roar of the falls mixed with the silence of the night sky, creating an atmosphere both eerie and exhilarating. I set up my wide-angle lens on a sturdy, reliable tripod, knowing that absolute stability was essential for the long exposure I had planned. The technique allowed me to capture the full sweep of the Milky Way arching gracefully over the jungle canopy, while the extended exposure softened the water into a silken veil as it spilled over the rocks. Standing there in the darkness, surrounded by the raw life of the jungle, I felt I was capturing not just an image, but the untamed spirit of Iriomote itself.
