Winter Waves at Cape Zampa

At Cape Zampa, the winter swells arrive with a kind of ferocity that borders on the theatrical. Standing on the cliffs, I trained the Tamron 150–600mm on a single breaking wave and let the telephoto compression drag the viewer directly into the vortex. The result is a study of raw motion, where the curl of the wave forms a hollowed chamber of turquoise, framed by an explosion of spray and foam. There is something almost sculptural in the way the ocean folds and collapses, a fleeting architecture that lasts only a fraction of a second before being swallowed by chaos again. This image, for me, is less about the sea as scenery and more about its living, breathing energy.

Technically, shooting with the Canon EOS 5DSr at such a focal length demanded both patience and stability. The lens allowed me to isolate a single wave amidst the shifting swells, freezing it in crisp detail with a fast shutter speed. The challenge was in timing—the Cape’s surf never breaks in quite the same way twice, and often the most promising peaks dissolve into mist before the shutter falls. But when the elements align, as they did here, the camera doesn’t just record a wave—it traps the sensation of standing before nature’s force, close enough to feel the sting of salt spray even from the safety of land.
