Yanbaru Wildlife Watching Trek

Okinawa Wildlife Encounters

For Photographers and non-Photographers alike. This trek aims to introduce you to the incredible wildlife of Okinawa.

What Gear Do You Need To Bring?

Ideas For Gear to Bring With You

Your Camera

This trip is not specifically for photographers. Any kind of camera will suffice, or none if you simply want to check out the wildlife of the region.

Flashlight / Headlamp

Make sure you have enough batteries to keep the light powered for at least three hours. Stranded in the jungle, at night, without any light?? No thanks.

Adequate Footwear

We will be walking in a mixture of terrains, predominantly shallow rivers and jungle pathways. I always suggest Felt Bottomed Booties and Wellington Boots.

Join in for a walk on the wild side away from the crowds for a nights trek into the jungles of Okinawa. Whether you're a photographer or just someone who enjoys witnessing the wonders of nature this trek is for you. The area of this walk is one where I regularly encounter numerous Habu Snakes as well as other iconic and infamous species of the Yambaru. I'll be available to help with macro photography if needed but for photography in general too as well as imparting knowledge and names about the critters we encounter.

What Will We See?
I can't guarantee that you'll see everything the Yanbaru has to offer but there is the potential to spot any number of the Iconic species native to the region. Sightings could include but not limit to:

  • Kuroiwa's Ground Gecko
  • Ishikawa's Frog
  • Himei Habu
  • Okinawa Habu
  • Akamata Snake
  • Kajika Frogs
  • Namies Frog
  • Green Tree Frogs
  • Andersons Crocodile Newt
  • Sword Tailed Newts

What You Need To Bring

  • Felt Bottomed Booties for River Walking
  • Wellington or Combat Boots for Jungle path walking
  • Rain Jacket
  • Bug Spray
  • Camera as personally inclined
  • Headlamp / Flashlight with batteries sufficient to power for up to 4hrs
  • Refreshments as personally inclined

Attendee Capacity
I prefer to offer smaller groups with a maximum attendee number of just six pax plus myself so seven in total. This works on a first come first served basis. Whilst this is not photography workshop per se I will be on hand to answer questions for those attending with cameras should you have any questions etc.

Trip Schedule:
Saturday May 30th / 31st, 2021

Timing:
1900hrs meet up in the car park at Toguchi Beach as a rendezvous point. Returning in the small hours. If you are governed by the curfew this may not be the ideal trip for you. In the past we have returned at 0230hrs. It all depends on what we see.

Trip Price: ¥6,500pp

Note:
This trip would not be suited to those with a nervous disposition towards Snakes, Spiders or any other of socially misunderstood critters such as Cockroaches, Slugs, Snails and Mosquitos, as these encounters with these critters are a very real possibility in the location we're headed.
