On days of heavy swell, there are numerous, what are called, slab waves along many of the reef breaks in Okinawa. These waves tend to be squat and super thick, which translates into them being incredibly heavy. Some may appear to be relatively small in stature, but their strength is otherworldly. If ever I feel like I have mistimed my interaction with slab waves, I know the impact vest and protective headwear were some of the best investments I’ve made for my safety to date.
